Communicating With Creditors And Credit Bureaus
Let’s talk straight about credit for a few minutes. Everyone’s credit needs a little help now and again. The important thing is figuring out how to resolve credit trouble before it becomes an issue. If you want to build credit, rather than ruin your credit, follow these easy communication tips.
First let’s understand how credit becomes damaged in the first place. Any time you fail to pay a debt to a creditor that creditor will attempt to collect the debt. The creditor, at some point in the collection process, will report the debt to one or more of the 3 credit bureau agencies.
Though the major credit bureaus can tell you your credit score, many companies can give you a credit rating. Your rating may be categorized as: Excellent, Good, Fair, or Poor. If your rating is “fair” or “poor,” you will need to start looking at each of your creditors. To do this, simply contact each of your creditors-this is any company that lends you money or services. Creditors can range from your credit card institution to your internet/phone/cable company.
Start by checking if you have any outstanding bills with your creditors. This is most likely a difficult step because it could require your own budgeting to reconcile your accounts. Pay off any unpaid debts bringing each statement up-to-date.
When you contact your creditors you goal is to check if you have any outstanding bills with the company. The hardest part now may be simply reconciling accounts. You need to pay off unpaid debts and bring statements up-to-date. In making your statements current, always record everything. It’s important to keep track of all communications. Write down all of the names of personnel you correspond with and any payment confirmation numbers. Dates are also important to note.
Now you can focus on your actual credit once issues with creditors have been resolved. This requires you to contact one or all of the major credit bureaus. Any kind of outstanding bill, as mentioned above, could cause a creditor to send a negative report in your name.
The credit bureaus can tell you exactly what damages have been made to your credit. So in talking with them, you will be required to provide proof that you have settled any debts with creditors you have. Evidence of settled debts is essential in clearing your name.
Once all of these steps are done and you’ve shown proof of your good standing with creditors, you can again begin to build credit. Your credit score will start to improve as a result of your communication with creditors and credit bureaus. Always remember that creditors want to settle debts. So don’t be afraid to resolve issues. Speak up about your financial issues! Always contact all the correct agencies and you will be on your way to repairing your credit.
