Clean And Alternative Sources Of Electricity

Would you be ok with not having to pay an expensive electric bill every month? How much is your electric bill now? Wouldn’t it be great to have that money in your pocket instead?

Did you know that you can create power for your home from your own back yard? What if you could set up a power generator on your own property and use renewable energy to fuel your needs?

If you answered yes to any of the above, you may want to take a closer look at making power via solar and wind energy. If you use a combination of the two, you will end up with as much electricity as you could want or need.

Solar power comes from sunlight. It’s free, and because the sun isn’t going anywhere (unlike fossil fuels) it is inexhaustible. You can install a solar panel just about anywhere, too.

There is no pollution from sunlight, and it makes no emissions. You can conserve the power that is generated and use it later also. Plus, after you do the original setup, the cost of keeping your generator working is very low.

The downside is the cost, because there’s a substantial setup investment. The up-front cost will end up paying for itself over time though, because you’ll save money in the long run. Imagine how much money you could save over five years, or even over one year, if you had no electricity bills at all!

Wind power is also a natural, safe, clean and inexhaustible resource. Both sun and wind are widely available in most places, and many people suggest that this is the future of energy. It will take a while to perfect the technology such that it becomes less expensive and more widespread, but once this happens we won’t have any more energy shortages.

Presently it is expensive to install either solar or wind generators. Still, the costs of these methods are coming down already. As time goes on, the technology will get less and less expensive, bringing the cost of these power sources into most people’s grasp.

Decorating Ideas We Used On My Boyfriend’s Apartment

My boyfriend used to have a very homely apartment with bare white walls. He had some posters, but they were beat up and didn’t do much to make it any more attractive. Is there anything more depressing than a mostly-empty apartment full of unattractive stuff?

He had a horrible pink comforter and an old tired loveseat in the living room. He had a kitchen island but no stools.

A couple of months into our relationship, we decided that the place needed redecorating. We didn’t have much of a budget though.

First, we decided to do something about those bare white walls. We used photos I’d taken of a local park. It was easy to have them blown up and then we put them in inexpensive picture frames we bought from WalMart.

The pictures look great, and also are meaningful for us. We went to that park on our first date, so it’s super-special. We got another nature picture at IKEA and got a matching frame, and that was around $30. That’s all it took to finish the walls.

We then moved on to the bedroom. Nasty pink comforter gone. We replaced it with a navy bed-in-a-bag set from WalMart. The bedroom looks so much better now!

We couldn’t replace the ratty loveseat on our budget, but didn’t want to have to look at it. Instead we just got a slipcover from Target. Add a couple of throw pillows for a bit of visual interest, and now it looks amazing!

Instead of worrying about picking up table and chairs, we then got three stools to go with the island. That was plenty for a dining area, and then we had that taken care of too.

His apartment looks so much better but that’s not the most important thing. The most important thing is that we did it together and had a lot of fun without spending much. And now it also is like the perfect place to come home to.

How To Keep Your Chimney Clean And Safe

You’re a new homeowner, and you are basking in the thought of enjoying your new home. One feature you are really looking forward to is having fires in your new fireplace.

But that is not to be. You move in and the next day, so does a raccoon via your chimney! You call animal control and the critter is taken away. Whew! Now for a nice fire. Except smoke backs up and messes up your nice white walls.

About then it will occur to you: this fireplace stuff is harder than you thought. There is more to maintaining and using a fireplace than just piling up logs and lighting them. Here are a few tips to help you maintain your new fireplace.

Start with a thorough inspection. You need your chimney carefully checked out by a professional before you intend to use the fireplaces. Looking up the chimney using a flashlight and hoping for the best doesn’t cut it here.

Hire a chimney sweep. He or she will know what they are looking for, and will be able to recommend what repairs are needed if they do find a problem. You also will need regular cleanings, especially for chimneys that are used to vent wood-burning fireplaces.

Use the damper. Keep it closed when you don’t have a fire going, and open it before you light a fire. If you don’t use your damper, you lose a third of your heating and air conditioning money right out the chimney. That’s not an insignificant contribution to your utility bill!

If you don’t already have a damper, have one installed. It will make sense financially with the money you will save on utilities. Be sure to open it before you start a fire though!

Having a fireplace is a real treat, and adds warmth and personality to any home. Make sure you do your part to take care of this wonderful feature.

Proper maintenance is important for two reasons. First, of course you want the fireplace to work properly. But more importantly, you want to ensure that the fires you light are going to stay contained, and won’t risk setting your home on fire.

How You Can Spend Less For Computer Ink Cartridges

Can you even remember not having a printer in the home? They are so useful, and the printer itself is not usually very expensive. Ink, however, can get expensive, particularly inkjet cartridges.

Knowing how to choose the right inkjet cartridge can help, as there are many options these days. Below you’ll find some strategies to help you make the best choices.

The first thing you should do is check your existing printer cartridge so you can find one with similar specifications. Many people fail to do this and end up purchasing the wrong cartridge when they get to the store. This can be a costly mistake!

Many people try to save money by buying generic inkjet cartridges, but this may lower the quality of your printed pieces. If you are printing directions, you may not mind, but if you are using your printer for professional products, you will want to stick with the same manufacturer that produced your printer.

Purchasing inkjet printers in the store is likely to be more expensive then ordering them from an online distributor. Once you have decided on the manufacturer and know the specifications your printer requires, you can save both time and money by making your inkjet cartridge purchases online.

Be careful when you hear of huge savings on ink made by manufacturers you’ve never heard of. There are a lot of ‘discount’ products out there – and some of them can actually cause harm to your printer. If you damage your printer by using the wrong ink, it’s not likely to be covered under warrantee.

If you purchase ink that harms your printer, you may find yourself spending money on repairs later, so you’ll want to be very careful to avoid this. If in doubt, call the manufacturer of your printer and ask.

Many cartridges can be recycled, which will save money and help the environment. You can also refill many cartridges, which is less waste and more money in your wallet.

Remodeling Your Bathroom On A Budget

A plain white boring bathroom can be perfectly functional but is usually not as attractive or relaxing as it could be. The goal of remodeling or redesigning a bathroom is to take this generic space and convert it into a space that is inviting and aesthetically pleasing.

Don’t worry that you will have to throw away everything in the bathroom. You are redesigning the bathroom, but not necessarily starting from scratch. Many items and fixtures can be reused in the new space. This article provides tips on how to proceed with a bathroom remodel, without wasting usable items you already have.

Theme or style: this is your first major choice to make. Pick whether you want to have a contemporary or a traditional style bathroom. This choice will help guide you in future choices, such as what colors and fabrics to use in your design.

Next, consider what overall impression you are trying to give. Do you want the bathroom to be calm, relaxed, romantic, pretty, elegant, edgy? Start with this component. Knowing what feel you wish to evoke, before you make the more specific choices, can help you achieve your goal.

Pay attention to scale. Not only do you want to choose the right items for the feel and style of the room, you also want to choose items that fit and are easily usable. All furniture and fixtures in the bathroom should fit without making the space feel crowded.

Don’t fill the room so full of items that you cannot move about, or that the room is jumbled and stressful to be in. You don’t have to use as much furniture as you can possibly fit in the space. Just use what is sufficient for your needs. A too-big bed, for instance, can take over a room and feel out of place.

Consider your choice of colors carefully. The colors you use should fit with the overall theme and impression you want to give. Don’t use a bright red color scheme in a traditional bathroom that you hope will have a relaxing feel, for instance. In that case, a pale blue or a taupe might work better.

If you want to use some pattern or texture in your design, remember to keep it simple. One or two subtle patterns can make the space inviting and warm. A subtle decorative weave in a window shade, for instance, can be a lovely touch. At the same time, a bold patterned wallpaper can be overwhelming and garish.

With accessories, be selective. One bold accessory can add more visual interest to a room, whereas a mishmash of smaller items can simply appear cluttered.

Artwork. When choosing artwork, remember that one stunning picture is going to have more impact than a collection of smaller or less attractive items.

Creating The Perfect Dining Room For Your Family

You may find that shopping for a new dining room set can be daunting. Between the different styles available, and the wide price range out there, you could easily wander about overwhelmed and unsure of what to choose. Starting out with a design plan can streamline the process considerably.

The first two factors to consider are space, and style. You’ll want to consider the dimensions of the room, to make sure that you choose furniture that will fit comfortably and be usable. Choosing a table that is so large that you cannot fully pull out the chairs would be unfortunate! Also, your dining room is a separate space but is part of your home, and as such should reflect your overall design scheme. Narrow your choices to styles that will fit the furniture and style of other rooms in the home.

Generally dining room sets will include table and chairs, and will have an optional matching storage item such as baker’s rack, side board, or hutch. While not strictly necessary, these extra items do add a great deal of storage space in the dining area. If room dimensions and budget allow, consider adding the optional unit to your dcor.

Armoires may also be used in the dining room, as may accent tables or small side tables. Although these are not necessarily produced as dining room furniture, many varieties of armoires and side tables can provide an attractive and useful accent to the room.

Don’t be afraid to go for a casual look in your dining area, if this suits your dcor best. There are counter-height sets that can provide just the right note of casual, relaxed enjoyment to the dining room.

For the modern dining area, a good choice would be table and chairs in dark wood tones, with a sleek and modern design. More architectural style chairs and a sculptural table would fit well in the dining area of a luxury condominium or apartment. Leather chairs always add a luxe touch, regardless of the shape or style of the chair and table.

Make sure that you can maintain the beauty of your dining set. If your set will see regular use, because you and your family eat in the dining room frequently, choose chairs that are easy to clean. Any upholstery or fabric on chairs should be washable and stain resistant.

Also consider how long people tend to sit at the table in your home. Families who eat quickly and then depart will have different needs than will families who tend to linger with friends after meals. If you and your family and friends tend to spend a good deal of time around the dining table, be sure to make the comfort of chairs a high priority in choosing the right set for you.
